'...undeniably thought-provoking.’ - Fetish Times Romain Slocombe’s latest collection arguably forms the most fascinating glimpse of Japanese erotic culture ever provided by a European gaijin ("outsider"). Never gratuitous, always provocative, his striking black and white photographs range from Scorsese-esque Tokyo street scenes, to more challenging images of the work of acclaimed rope-master Chimuo Nureki, and stunning portrait-style shots of the beautiful, enigmatic women who populate this thriving industry. Providing a fascinating insight into an area of modern Japanese lifestyle that is rarely documented, the collection also acts as a cultural metaphor exposing the inherent contradictions of Japanese culture: the strict censorship of sexual imagery versus the undercurrents of fantasy, fetishisms and bondage. The same film also received awards at similar European festivals earlier that year.
