“THE
ONLY TRUE OBSCENITY IS CENSORSHIP” SEX SENSATIONS is the first ever illustrated study of legendary adult film-maker Lasse Braun. Born Alberto Ferro in 1936, Braun started out as a porn smuggler in Europe before making his first short film, or loop, in 1967. Relocating to Amsterdam in 1969, he set up his own company, AB BETA, and proceeded to commence the filming, packaging and sales of his main series of 63 individual loops, forming the highly original and innovative body of work upon which his reputation largely rests. Produced between 1970 and 1975, each set of three loops had its own theme – for example Vikings, Nymphomania, Love In Scandinavia – and was as carefully crafted as any Hollywood production. They were also notorious for broaching “taboo” or more unusual subject matter. Not content with merely producing the highest-quality films, Braun also worked hard on marketing, giving each 10-minute loop its own full-colour, illustrated box, and printing opulent sales catalogues. He also used the films as a platform to vocalise a powerful philosophy of sexual freedom and revolution through erotic excess. In 1975, as well as shooting V.I.P., the last of his main loop series, Braun took up the challenge of creating a feature film, a unique porno movie which would “make the whole world horny”, and came up with his masterpiece, SENSATIONS. Featuring a cast of true sexual libertines, SENSATIONS was a huge success first at Cannes and then worldwide, receiving justifiable critical adulation. This was the climax of the classic body of work for which he remains famous – the ground-breaking and taboo-busting loops filmed between 1969 and 1975, culminating in one of the all-time great porno/art movies. Pornography or not, this work marks Lasse Braun/Alberto Ferro as one of the great innovators and visionaries in the history of world cinema. Jack Hunter’s daring new study of Lasse Braun, SEX SENSATIONS, covers this period in detail and also tracks the director’s life and work up to 1985, at which point he largely withdrew from sight. SEX SENSATIONS is heavily illustrated in full-colour throughout, containing over 150 full-colour images and running to 112 full-colour pages. The book features a detailed introduction, and a detailed illustrated filmography of all the director’s loops and features. It also includes a facsimile reproduction of the rare 48-page SENSATIONS cine-novel, plus a bonus illustrated section of Braun’s lesser-known photo-shoot work for various European sex magazines. SEX
